CHARACTER INFO

• Character Name: Sam Porter-Bridges
• Character Age: 30s, but not stated in canon
• Character Canon: Death Stranding
• Canon Point: After the first game, but before the sequel.

• Character History: Information on Sam can be found here

• Character Personality: Provide information about their personality, both negative and positive aspects — with three of each. Give examples of how they've behaved this way. You do not need to provide an essay, but please submit enough to give a feel for the character.

— Loyal: Although he may not be the most personable guy, if there’s one thing Sam is, it’s loyal. To a fault, really, and often to his detriment. Although he much prefers to work independently and be self-employed, he honours his mother’s dying wish to join the government-run delivery company, in order to work towards reuniting the country. Although their mother dies soon after, Sam’s sister Amelie is there to guide him on his journey and keep him moving forward. Every time he contemplates giving up, Amelie appears to ask him to keep going, for her. And he does, because he cannot imagine doing otherwise. Everything he does is for his sister.
— Compassionate: BB Units are, in the world of Death Stranding, a kind of technology that uses premature newborns as a method of detecting the undead monsters that stalk the country before they can be seen by the human eye. Everyone who is familiar with BB Units considers them as machinery, as merely a piece of equipment to be used, repaired, and disposed of as needed. Sam is one of the few who doesn’t see them this way. He treats his own BB Unit as he would any other baby, using “her” instead of “it”, singing to her when she’s upset, holding her and rocking her, protecting her when she’s in danger. He even gives her the name he would have given his own daughter: Louise, or Lou. Towards the end of the game, Sam’s higher-ups declare that he’s grown to attached to the unit, and it needs to be disposed of, but he refuses and frees her from the system instead.
— Hard-working: There is no more hard-working man in the UCA than Sam Porter-Bridges, anyone can tell you that. He is the most efficient, highest rated porter in any company. Top grades across the board, stellar reviews, people cannot stop raving about him. His work ethic and timely, safe deliveries have earned him nicknames such as Sam The Man, The Man Who Delivers, The Great Deliverer, and a dozen others. Some people even specifically request him to deliver their items, as they don’t trust anyone else to do so. He walks thousands of miles, from one side of the country to the other, in order to complete each task. If he has to, he’ll walk until his feet are bleeding, and he has scars on his shoulders from where the porter pack has dug into them over the years.

— Distant/unfriendly: Sam is a hard person to get to know, despite most people around him trying. He’s surly, and off-putting, he doesn’t talk very much. The people around him do their best to open up to him, but he very rarely, if ever, reacts. He isn’t interested in hearing the life stories of Deadman or Heartman, and he flat out falls asleep when Fragile is trying to share more of her own story. He isn’t interested in getting to know people, and believes he’s just fine as a loner. He’d rather do his job and go back to being by himself, if possible. This comes from a long-standing unwillingness to be vulnerable with anyone. The only person who got him to let them in at all was his therapist, and he ended up marrying her.
— Jaded/bitter: Although it is understandable that Sam is jaded about the world, given all that has happened to the former USA in his lifetime, his jadedness has made him bitter and angry. Most everything he does in the game is related to the reunification of the country, but it’s not a cause he believes in. He completes the tasks that are asked of him out of the aforementioned loyalty to his sister and others, but he doesn’t feel that it’s possible to unify the country or the people in it. He states time and time again that theirs is a pointless endeavor, and that he, personally, has no hope for this mission succeeding. Towards the end of the game, he goes on a rather justified rant about how the people in his life have used him, how he’s been pushed around by others, and how tired and angry he is at the situations others have put him in.
— Nihilistic (cw: suicide mention): There are times when Sam’s bitterness and hopelessness go even deeper, to the point where he stops caring about his own livelihood. He constantly puts himself and his wellbeing at risk because he has reanimation powers, known as repatriation in this world; if he dies, he comes back, no matter what. At the start of the game, we can see him riding around recklessly on his motorcycle, dying, and repatriating. Because this condition is rare, his therapist expresses her disbelief that Sam has it. As a response, Sam comes to their next meeting with a syringe of an unknown substance, injects himself, and dies in front of her to prove his point. His immortality makes him feel that nothing he does really matters, since in the end, it can’t kill him.

• Character Skills: Does your character have any particular skills that might help them in game? Maybe they have knowledge of firearms, carpentry, fishing, maybe foraging or how to make clothes. List them here in bullet-point form:

• Non-lethal firearms knowledge
• Foraging and other basic survival skills (camping, finding high ground, etc)
